Yorkshire fine 'frustrating', says head coach Gibson
Gloucestershire drew with Yorkshire on a damp final day at Headingley, where Ollie Price made his first first-class century, picking up the three runs he needed in the opening over. Daniel Moriarty, on loan from Surrey, finished with five for 139 on Yorkshire debut.
Afterwards Ottis Gibson, Yorkshire’s coach, spoke about the sanctions that the ECB had suggested at Tuesday’s meeting of the CDC: hearty points deductions and a £500,000 fine, part-suspended. “It’s frustrating because a lot of change has taken place here at Yorkshire, including myself being here,” he said. “So to sanction a group of people who are trying to move the club forward doesn’t seem to make sense. It would be naive to think we’re not going to get some sort of punishment, but it does seem a bit harsh.”
It only took Lancashire 45 minutes to polish off Surrey and inflict a first defeat at the Oval since August 2020. Surrey were skiddaddled for 84, the cloud cover heavy and the floodlights on, with Will Williams picking up four for 23, and Tom Bailey skipping off with five for 48.
Kent collected an innings victory against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road, only their second Championship win of the season. Joe Denly twirled down a elephantine 49 overs, four for 164. Sussex’s last wicket pair held on for dear life at Sophia Gardens, Oli Carter, 55, and Henry Shipley batting away 21.2 overs. Mitch Swepson, the Australian legspinner finished with four wickets.
Meanwhile, Peter Handscomb carefully tapped out a magnificent unbeaten 136 to hand Leicestershire a draw with Durham at Grace Road. Matt Parkinson grabbed two wickets, including his brother Callum, lbw for two, but No10 Ed Barnes kept Handscomb company with a 43-ball five not out until rain intervened.
And Worcestershire’s Gareth Roderick and Ed Pollock frustrated a Derbyshire side hoping to pull off their first Championship win of the season.

“The bowling performance last evening and then again this morning was simply outstanding. I don’t think the conditions were that helpful, to be honest – it was more a case of the bowling being really accurate and relentless. We showed a lot of drive out there in the field, and that’s exactly what you need if you are going to beat a really top team like Surrey on their own ground.
“I am sure Surrey will feel a bit shell-shocked after that but both Tom Bailey and Will Williams must take huge credit for the way they bowled in that second innings. Tom hits the seam every ball, he’s got height and a great engine as he showed in that 11-over opening spell last night.
“Both Tom and Will keep coming at you and they are good bowlers on good pitches because they don’t stop doing the right things. It’s a great win and we have players who are getting better and better in red-ball cricket so that’s very encouraging for us.”

Tuesday's round-up
If Liam Dawson had wanted to send a message to the England selectors, he could not have done better if he had wrapped himself up in fairy lights and cartwheeled across the ECB car park.
He was instrumental in Hampshire’s thrashing of Middlesex by an innings and 61 runs in three days, with 12 wickets and a century under his belt – the best Championship performance of his life. Middlesex followed on, their second innings not subsiding quite as quickly as their first, but Dawson made hay almost straight away and finished with six for 90.
Another 10-wicket match for Simon Harmer, the 14th of his career, rocketed Essex up the table after they clattered Warwickshire by nine wickets. Some tail-end hitting by Dom Bess, on loan from Yorkshire, and Jake Lintott, together with 61 from Dan Mousley, at least meant Essex had to bat again.
A bewildering collapse by Nottinghamshire – all out for 92 in their second innings – handed Somerset victory by 399 runs. Things got off to a bad start when Haseeb Hameed was run out for nought and didn’t much improve; Josh Davey finishing with four for 17. Earlier, James Rew, just 19, made his fourth hundred of the season as Somerset followed up a first innings 163 with a second innings of 514 for eight declared.
Briefly, it seemed as if tumbling wickets at the other end would ruin Daniel Bell-Drummond’s big moment, but with Kent nine wickets down a tired swipe into the leg side moved him to a magnificent 300no, the third triple in Kent’s history, at Northamptonshire. Kent posted a first innings of 621 all out. Northamptonshire are 214 for five in their second innings, still 170 behind.
At the Oval, Tom Bailey turned around the match against Surrey in a breath, taking four wickets in 16 balls: Dom Sibley, Tom Latham, Jamie Smith and Ben Foakes all back in the pavilion with 23 on the board. Lancashire need five more wickets to inflict Surrey’s first defeat of the season.
The Price brothers, Tom and Ollie, put on 162 to take Gloucestershire past the follow-on against Yorkshire at Headingley. Ollie needs three runs to match Tom with a maiden Championship century in 2023.
Leus du Plooy danced to a maiden double-century for Derbyshire while Sam Northeast’s first hundred of the year put Glamorgan in a promising position against Sussex.

Preamble
Hello! It’s a muggy morning in Leeds where Yorkshire are determined to try and curate a win out of what looks like a draw with Gloucestershire. Three wins yesterday – for Hampshire, Essex and Somerset – means all eyes turn to The Oval where Lancashire have a chance of ripping the title race open by handing Surrey their first defeat of the season.
Elsewhere, Sussex have an impossible tricky run-chase; a featherbed at Grace Road looks likely to end in early handshakes; Worcestershire will do well to escape Derby’s clutches and Northants are on the rack in the face of DBD’s triple ton.
