The Green Bay Packers are dealing with their own turmoil at the moment, but here’s a big surprise out of Indianapolis: After firing Frank Reich, the Colts have named former Packers center Jeff Saturday as the team’s interim coach.
Saturday, now 47, was a five-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro with the Colts as a player between 1999 and 2011 but has never coached at the NFL level. He spent the 2012 season with the Packers and actually made a sixth Pro Bowl despite being benched in favor of Evan Dietrich-Smith in December of that season.
Overall, Saturday played 962 snaps for the Packers in 2012. He allowed 10 pressures and committed one penalty, per PFF.
Saturday, who retired after the 2012 season, has worked for ESPN as a broadcaster and analyst since 2013. He’s also been a coach for a school in Georgia since 2017 while also consulting with the Colts this season.
Saturday signed a one-day contract and retired as a member of the Colts on March 7, 2013.
Over nine years later, he’s back in a much different role.
The Colts are 3-5-1 and have lost three straight games, including a 26-3 defeat at the hands of the New England Patriots on Sunday. Saturday’s first game as interim coach will come on Sunday against Davante Adams and the Las Vegas Raiders.
