Surprise Championship duo in race for Leeds United midfield target

Championship duo West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United are reportedly two of the sides keen on Leeds United target Lewis O’Brien. O’Brien enjoyed a stellar season with Huddersfield Town and played a key role as the Terriers reached the play-off final, where they were defeated 1-0 by Nottingham Forest.

The 23-year-old is reportedly one of several players on Victor Orta’s radar as Leeds look to add a new midfielder to their squad this summer. The Whites have already signed Brenden Aaronson from Red Bull Salzburg, but they are also thought to be keen on signing someone for a deeper role alongside Kalvin Phillips.

However, they are set to face fierce competition for O’Brien – not just from Premier League clubs – but West Brom and Sheffield United too. Crystal Palace, Southampton and newly promoted duo Bournemouth and Fulham are all interested too, according to TeamTalk.

O'Brien is thought to be available for around £10m this summer. Had Huddersfield won promotion, it was rumoured he would be given a new contract to ensure the Terriers would stand to earn much more than the mooted £10m in the event of his sale.

That contract extension would be O'Brien's second in one season after he signed a new deal in September of last year. His current deal runs until the end of the 2024/25 season.

While O'Brien has yet to play at the highest level, plenty of team mates, pundits and ex-pros have touted him as having the ability to make the jump to the Premier League sooner rather than later. At around £10m, the Terriers midfielder could prove to be a real bargain for Leeds should they go back in for the midfielder this summer.
