Surprise as popular cafe 'with nice food and good service' goes up for sale

Shoppers voiced their surprise after a 'popular' cafe was put up for sale. The cafe in Long Eaton's High Street, Peter W Thein, also known as Pete’s Upper Crust Cafe, has been put on the market for £229,950.

The manager of the cafe, Aiden Goodman, said the venue was put up for sale due to the owner's retirement and due to the current state of the high street. Mr Goodman, who has worked at the cafe for 12 years and been manager for five, added: "The main reason is because the owner wants to retire, and also that Long Eaton is very quiet these days, there are empty shops and not many are open."

Shoppers in the town spoke about the cafe and highlighted a ‘good all day breakfast’ as well as good service from the staff and always being full of customers. Donna Langton, who moved to Long Eaton five years ago, said it was a shame the cafe has been put up for sale. The 52-year-old said: “It is quite popular, I see people inside and outside.

“It has surprised me, it has been around as one of the longest down here. I’m shocked. It seems a shame - so many shops down the high street are empty.”

Another shopper, Sharon Hopkins, 61, a driving instructor from Long Eaton, spoke of her memories of the cafe, and highlighted the good food they serve. She said: “They had a good all day breakfast. It was always full, it was nice and good service. I’m surprised, I thought it was doing well. It's a typical cafe, you can get a good all day breakfast, a typical British cafe. Very often I would call in for a toasted tea cafe and coffee. I’m really surprised.”

Lauren Key, from Sawley, says she would like to see something different replace it. The 27-year-old said: “Everytime I walked past it was full. I’ve been a couple of times in the past, it was alright. I rated it, decent food, and good staff. There’s always room for something different, another eating place."

Recently, Long Eaton welcomed a new cafe - A-one Cafe and Kitchen - which is also on the High Street. it was formerly Mrs Bs, which was open for seven years. The new cafe has the same menu, feel and atmosphere that Mrs Bs had, however, some Japanese and Chinese-style dishes have been added to the menu.

People in the town have also welcomed multi-million-pound plans to transform their community, saying it badly needs a 'face lift'. Long Eaton was awarded £24.8m funding from the Government last June to move forward with its Long Eaton Town Investment Plan.
