Surgo appointed to create £15m housing scheme on former Tall Trees Hotel site

Newcastle construction company Surgo has been appointed as the main contractor of a £15m housing development on the site of former Teesside leisure spot Tall Trees Hotel.

Bede Homes has appointed Surgo Construction to the development at Beck View in Yarm, which will lead to the creation of 21 five-bedroom executive homes overlooking Saltergill Rock. The properties have been released for sale through Yarm-based estate agents Michael Poole, with prices ranging from £560,000 to £745,000.

Bede Homes managing director Joe Docherty said: “We are tremendously excited about this development and there has already been significant interest in the properties because of the wonderful location.

"Surgo are a long standing and respected contractor, known for building quality homes across the North East, and Bede Homes are delighted to have appointed them to build this flagship £15m development in Yarm. I’m very much looking forward to working with managing director James Walker and the Surgo team.”

Mr Walker said: “We are delighted that Bede Homes has chosen to appoint Surgo as its main contractor on such a desirable scheme in a fabulous location. I believe that our extensive experience built on successfully delivering many high-quality residential developments for discerning clients, such as Bede Homes, makes us the perfect project partner to construct the new homes at Beck View.”

News of the latest housing project for Surgo comes a month after it published accounts for the year ended October 31 2021, highlighting a strong order book and healthy level of cash reserves, with revenue of £15.9m, up from £12.7m, and the previous year’s operating loss of £420,667 converting to profit of £36,369.

Projects the firm is involved in include two locations in Northumberland, where it is working on the renovation of listed properties in Ponteland and a development of 16 properties in Acklington.

Gateshead-based Bede Homes was established in 2016 by Andrew Burnett and Richard Buckley, who formed the land and planning agency Buckley Burnett in 2011. They were joined by Gavin Cordwell-Smith who is chief executive of property and construction organisation The Hellens Group, and Joe Docherty, who has held a number of executive and non-executive roles and who previously led the Tees Valley Regeneration and the house building division of Home Group.

Mr Docherty said: “The previous landowners had planning permission for 35 homes, but we decided to reduce the density because we were mindful of concerns in Teesside about over development. These will be stunning homes in a stunning location, and the development is part of our vision for Bede Homes to be the region’s premier independent house builder.”
