Surgery robot providing 'fewer complications' arrives at Crosshouse Hospital

A surgery robot has arrived at Crosshouse Hospital with the new technology set to be a game changer for patients.

Health chiefs have promised the new da Vinci bot will provide 'fewer complications' when patients go under the knife.

The advanced technology has arrived on NHS Ayrshire & Arran soil with top medics undergoing training on how to use the new system.

Surgeons will be able to control the robotic device to perform very precise and minimally invasive procedures for selected patients.

NHS bosses say the system will offer a number of patient benefits compared with convention surgery including less blood loss and less time in hospital.

Mr Christopher Ray, a consultant in colorectal surgery, said: “We are excited to be following in the footsteps of other Boards in Scotland with this transformative technology.

“We want to ensure we are able to provide the best patient experience we can for our patients. Using this new technology we expect patients to have better clinical outcomes.

"Patients will be able to return to work and other hobbies and activities sooner, with the benefits that this brings to wellbeing and society.

"With quicker recovery times and shorter hospital stays we also expect robot-assisted surgery to improve the hospital efficiency and help increase our capacity to allow us to see more patients.”

The da Vinci robot will be housed at the Kilmarnock hospital with teams in urology, gynaecology and colorectal surgery all commencing their training.

It is hoped the first surgeries using the new technology will start next year.
