Surgeon Hasnat Khan was able to 'show Diana what real love was' says her close friend

She famously divorced Prince Charles after a decade of marriage but now a friend of Diana, Princess of Wales says it was a heart surgeon who "was able to show her what real love was".

The comments are made by Diana's close friend and astrologer, Debbie Frank, in a new ITV documentary, simply entitled Diana, to mark what would have been her 60th birthday.

Airing on ITV on Thursday, June 24 at 9pm, viewers are taken through Diana’s life, from her time as a nursery assistant to becoming a global icon. It comes just three months after ITV screened Oprah Winfrey's interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, which you can read the reaction to here.

The new Diana documentary looks at her romantic life and relationship with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan after splitting from Prince Charles in 1992.

Diana first met the doctor in 1995, while visiting a friend who was in hospital and she soon started visiting him at the hospital where he worked at.

The couple started their relationship later the same year and Diana and Charles formally divorced in 1996.

Debbie, who became friends with Diana in 1989, says in the programme: “He (Hasnat) was in many ways a real match for her because he was unseeking for himself…who was able to show her what real love was."

Diana kept her relationship with Hasnat a secret from the wider world and the couple dated for two years with Diana introducing him to her children, Prince William and Prince Harry, before their relationship ended.

The intense scrutiny from the media put pressure on their relationship and the couple split up in 1997.

A year later Diana was dating Dodi Fayed, although as revealed in the documentary, Diana’s friend Derek Deane did not believe she was over Hasnat and died in the fatal car crash in Paris.

Many of Diana’s friends believe Hasnat was the "love of her life" and describe him as her "true love".
