The Metropolitan Police have dropped their speed-limit tolerance threshold by 1mph, which has seen the number of fines being given for speeding rise by 259 per cent in London.
Rules set by the police previously stated that drivers could only face action if they broke the limit by 10 per cent, plus 3mph.
However, the Met’s recent “stealth drop” now sees those who break the speed limit by 10 per cent plus 2mph faced with a fixed-penalty notice or sent on a speed-awareness course.
