ORLANDO, Fla. — An Altamonte Springs man was the second person in a week bitten by a shark at New Smyrna Beach, according to Volusia County Beach officials.
The 20-year-old man was surfing around 3 p.m. on Sunday when he was bitten on his right foot, said Deputy Chief Tamra Malphurs, spokesperson for Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue.
The man’s injury wasn’t life-threatening and he wasn’t taken to a hospital for treatment.
No one saw the shark, Malphurs said.
On Wednesday, officials recorded the first shark bite of the year at New Smyrna Beach.
A 21-year-old fisherman from New Jersey was bitten by a 5-6 foot blacktip shark, officials said. His injury wasn’t serious.
Last year, Volusia County had the highest number of recorded shark bites in Florida, with 17 incidents tracked by the International Shark Attack File.
