SURAT: Tapi river passing through the city was flowing bank-to-bank following the increase in water discharged from the Ukai reservoir since Tuesday morning.
According to officials at the Ukai dam on river Tapi, the discharge till Tuesday evening had increased to 1.95 lakh cusecs. This was mainly because of increased inflow into the reservoir from the catchment area of Tapi river that witnessed heavy downpour.
The inflow of water that was 87,000 cusecs on Tuesday morning increased to 2.50 lakh cusecs in the evening due to heavy rain in the catchment areas.
Ukai dam officials said that 1.76 lakh cusecs water was released directly downstream while 17,616 cusecs was released into the hydro-power generators. About 1,100 cusecs of water was released into the canal for irrigation.
Due to the heavy inflow of water, the discharge will be maintained at about 2 lakh cusecs from Ukai.
Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) teams were keeping a close watch on the water levels in the city’s low-lying areas.
“The rain has stopped in the catchment of Ukai dam and it is likely that the inflow of water will decrease gradually. However, the discharge from Ukai will be maintained at 2 lakh cusecs for the next few hours,” said an official.
