The Supreme Court on Monday decided to examine a plea to simplify the legal process for adoption of children in the country.
A Bench led by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud issued notice on the petition filed by an NGO 'The Temple of Healing', represented by a petitioner-in-person Piyush Saxena, which said there were only 4000 child adoptions annually though there were "three crore orphan children in the country".
"There are several infertile couples who are willing to have a child,” the petition submitted.
Mr. Saxena said the Child Adoption Resource Information and Guidance System ought to appoint trained “adoption preparers” who could help the prospective parents to complete the cumbersome paperwork required for adoption.
“We will issue notice and see what the government has to say on this issue,” Justice Chandrachud said.
