Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito recently confirmed that he had a phone conversation with President-elect Donald Trump to discuss the qualifications of a former law clerk seeking a government position in the incoming administration. Alito clarified that the discussion did not involve Trump's efforts to delay his sentencing in a New York hush money case.
Alito stated that his former law clerk, William Levi, had requested him to speak with President-elect Trump regarding Levi's suitability for a government role. Alito agreed to the conversation, which took place on Tuesday, a day before Trump filed an emergency appeal to postpone his sentencing scheduled for Friday.
Despite the timing of the call and Trump's subsequent appeal, Alito emphasized that the discussion with Trump did not touch upon the pending case. The president-elect lodged his appeal on Wednesday morning, following their conversation.
The Trump transition team has not yet provided a response to requests for comment on the matter.
