Supreme Court Faces Key Decisions On Capitol Riot Fallout

The Supreme Court is seen under stormy skies in Washington, June 20, 2019. In the coming days, the Supreme Court will confront a perfect storm mostly of its own making, a trio of decisions stem

The Supreme Court is set to rule on a trio of decisions linked to the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. These decisions include determining whether former President Donald Trump has immunity from criminal charges related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. Additionally, the court will decide if Trump supporters involved in storming the Capitol can be prosecuted for obstructing an official proceeding. Another case involves former Trump adviser Steve Bannon appealing his contempt of Congress conviction.

Aside from these high-profile cases, the Supreme Court is also expected to rule on several other major disputes covering a range of issues such as abortion, homelessness, federal regulatory power, the opioid epidemic, and social media platforms.

The outcomes of the cases related to Trump could potentially fuel narratives about the court's conservative supermajority, which includes justices appointed by Trump. The decisions may also impact Trump's claims of unfair treatment of Capitol riot defendants by the Justice Department.

Despite criticisms over the court's handling of the immunity issue, the justices are moving swiftly compared to past cases involving presidential power. The court's decisions on these matters are eagerly awaited as they could have significant implications for Trump and his allies.

Other pending cases before the court include issues like abortion rights in states that banned the procedure post-Roe v. Wade, homelessness regulations, the Chevron decision affecting federal regulations, social media laws, the Purdue Pharma settlement for the opioid epidemic, and challenges to the EPA's air pollution plan.

As the court nears the end of its term, these cases highlight the diverse and impactful range of issues that the justices are tasked with deciding.
