"Supposed to be fun" - Gary Lineker sides with Manchester United star Antony amid skill debate

Gary Lineker says he 'loved' seeing Antony’s moment of skill against FC Sheriff on Thursday night.

The incident sparked heated debate about showboating during a match after Robbie Savage called it “embarrassing” and Paul Scholes labelled him a “clown”. A number of his club team-mates have jumped to the defence of Antony, as has countryman Neymar.

Erik ten Hag says he is all for his player showing skill if there is an end product. “When it's functional and it’s winning the football match, I’m OK with it,” he said.

However, he warned: "To impress the opponent it’s good but it's also you don’t want to provoke the opponent in the wrong way. Finally, it’s about this - his game has to be effective.”

Antony himself came out to defend his actions. Writing on Instagram, he said: "We're known for our art and I won't stop doing what got me to where I am!"

Match of the Day presenter Lineker also had his say. Writing on Twitter, he said: “It’s [Antony’s skill] great. Love seeing skills on the pitch. Football is entertainment and supposed to be fun.”

United midfielder Fred, who called criticism of Antony “annoying”, agrees. He explained: "I think it starts with us being Brazilians. Brazilians have quality in their blood. It’s always been that way since Pele, to have quality, to dribble, to score, to dance, to smile.

"So I think people have to understand this aspect that we have. So it wasn’t offensive to anyone what he did. Of course, if it’s offensive, we’ll come to him in the dressing room and talk. But it was not offensive to anyone. It’s his game. I think he has to keep doing it.”

Diogo Dalot added: “He wants to entertain a little bit in his game. It’s a part of the way he plays. We’re happy to have Antony with us, he’s a fantastic player and I’m sure that his technique and his dribbling will help.”
