Tory MPs used to say they were waiting for Sue Gray before making their minds up on Boris Johnson - so just what are they waiting for now?
The Sue Gray report has put an official government stamp on the grubby residue of lockdown scandals that are all that is left of Boris Johnson’s drained credibility.
What was it about illegal parties which left red wine spilled on the walls, fights breaking out, a child’s swing being broken, and vomiting, while the rest of the country was in lockdown, that the Tory MPs think is acceptable?
Perhaps the ultimate insult to the bereaved and the law-abiding is how this debauched Downing Street spiv saw them as fools and regarded the security staff who tried to stop their shenanigans as little people who did not matter.
Yet as far as Tory MPs are concerned, the conclusion of the Sue Gray report is contained in the arrogant words of Johnson’s senior aide Martin Reynolds, who wrote “we seem to have got away with it”.
Yesterday, as Johnson “humbly” apologised and swiftly switched to the offensive, we saw that he thinks he can get away with it too. His “born to rule, rules don’t apply to me” attitude has taken him far but he has led the Tory party over the edge of an electoral precipice.
If the Tories hang on to Johnson’s coat tails they will go over the cliff with him.
Scots in particular are not going to be made fools of like this. The Scottish Tory leadership are naive in the extreme if they think that with or without Boris Johnson they can take support for the Union for granted.
Johnson likes to present himself as the roadblock to independence but he is only fooling himself in that respect.
Boris Johnson’s continuation in Downing Street after the findings of the Partygate report could turn out to be the most clear and present danger to the Union there is.
Gun madness
After Dunblane, our gun laws were changed to stop it ever happening again.
We’ve had no mass school shootings in Scotland since then. But in America, they happen time and again.
Andy Murray, who survived Dunblane, has described this situation in the US as “F***ing madness”. Strong words – but we agree wholeheartedly.
Every time a gun massacre occurs, US politicians express sorrow but end up doing nothing. This is entirely the fault of the Republican party which, through donations, is in the pocket of the powerful gun lobby.
Every sensible attempt at changing the law fails because of this bad faith.
These tragedies are avoidable and obstructive politicians have blood on their hands.
