Support for West Lothian volunteers is recognised

West Lothian Council’s Advice Shop has been given the sought-after Investing in Volunteers Award for their work to support those who give up their own time to help others.

The Advice Shop team were presented with the national award, which is managed by Volunteer Scotland, in recognition of this work.

A rigorous nine-month assessment period help earn them the award until 2026, with checks against best practice for managing volunteers across nine key indicators.

Currently 40 volunteers work with the Advice Shop, helping local residents to maximise their income by offering support such filling in forms, translating or giving benefits advice.

Many of the volunteers were interviewed as part of the assessment, with one saying: “I have volunteered my entire life in all different places, and I have never felt better supported as a volunteer than I do at the Advice shop.”

Leader of West Lothian Council Lawrence Fitzpatrick said: “Congratulations to everyone at the Advice Shop on the Investing in Volunteers awards.

“Volunteers contribute a huge amount to our society and make a real difference to our local communities.

“We are deeply grateful to the amazing volunteers at the Advice Shop who give up their own time to help fellow residents in need.

“It’s important that these volunteers are supported in this role, so it’s fantastic to see this work being recognised. Thanks also to our assessor for their support in getting through this process.”

The Advice Shop is a free, impartial and confidential service to help the people of West Lothian with a focus to alleviate poverty and to promote inclusion and equality through advice, assistance and advocacy.
