Supplies dropped to isolated communities ahead of more rain, renewed major flooding for NSW

Inland communities in New South Wales are again bracing for more flooding as the State Emergency Service (SES) urgently works to resupply isolated towns before the next weather system strikes.

A trough moving in from the west of the state from Friday is expected to meet with a cold front on Sunday and Monday, generating thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall.

The SES is working to deliver groceries, medication, fodder and other essential items before the next weather event, calling it one of the biggest resupply missions in the history of the agency.

NSW SES Commissioner Carlene York said some evacuation orders might need to be reissued this weekend.

"With the saturated catchments, the wet ground, (and) the full rivers, we are very concerned about the rainfall that is forecast over the next few days impacting some of the areas that we have seen some severe flooding," Commissioner York said.

"We are looking at some areas of concern which is Forbes and Condobolin and we are anticipating that there will be a chance of heavy rain around that area," she said.

"Please understand that we may have to reissue some evacuation warnings or orders."

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has warned of possible minor to major flooding along rivers in the state's Central West and South West from Sunday, and parts of the North West inland catchments from Monday, describing the weather system as bringing some "very dangerous storms over the next few days".

"Places like Hay, Condobolin, Narrandera, Cobar, Bourke, so areas that have experienced a lot of flooding over recent weeks and some of those areas are experiencing major flooding," BOM spokesperson Jane Golding said.

"That cold front does look like it will produce widespread rainfall again over the inland of New South Wales," she said.

"What this new rain will mean is a recharge in the upper reaches so places like Gunnedah, Tamworth, Moree, Dubbo, Parkes, Bathurst and Wagga could see renewed flooding later in the weekend into Monday Tuesday."

Main rivers of focus for the SES continue to be the Lachlan, Murrumbidgee, Barwon, Darling and the Murray.

Roads into communities including Walgett, Collarenebri and Lightning Ridge have been cut off for weeks.

Releases from Burrendong Dam are expected to cause renewed rises along the Macquarie River at Wellington, Dubbo and downstream.

The BOM said the climate drivers behind the inland flooding were expected to shift.

"There is hope for the inland that it will ease off over the next month or two however the eastern part of the state will probably (see an) increase (in flooding)," Ms Golding said.
