Supermoon lunar eclipse delights skygazers across the world

An extremely rare partial eclipse of a supermoon has delighting star gazers around the world.

Two lunar phenomena merged on Tuesday night, leading to a red tinted moon moving across the sky.

Part of the moon then appeared to disappear as the Earth’s shadow obscured part of the satellite’s surface, creating a partial eclipse.

A similar event is not expected to happen again until August 2026.

Stunning photos captured the huge moon moving across London as well as above the mountains in Fort William in Scotland.

The moon was at its brightest in the UK at around 3.45am on Wednesday morning but could also be seen behind landmarks in the US, Russia and China.

The supermoon provided a stunning setting for sports matches and beaches in the US and also shone brightly behind cathedrals and churches across Europe.

It will still be visible for the next few nights in the UK.

There will only be four supermoons, which take place when the moon’s orbit is closest to the earth, in Britain this year.

In August a rare blue supermoon also left Londoners stunned as it glimmered over Tower Bridge and the Shard.

It provided a striking backdrop for the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and was pictured hanging above San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge.

The moon becomes a supermoon when it appears 30 per cent brighter and 14 per cent bigger in the sky, according to the Met Office.
