Supermarket swipes cheapest crown for first time as we compare prices of products we all use

We're all trying to make savings at the supermarket as the cost of living continues to bite.

While we can cut back on some items, there are others we use day-in day-out, such as basics like milk and bread.

But when supermarkets are constantly changing their prices and battling it out with one another for our custom, it can be difficult to keep track of where you can find those items for less.

That's why we've been running a regular price comparison to keep on top of some of those ever-changing prices - and this week a supermarket has swiped the cheapest crown for the first time.

Shopping at Tesco, Asda, Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury's and Morrisons, we've been comparing the cost of the same eight items - a two-pint bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, coffee, teabags, butter, beans, chicken breasts and mince.

In our most recent comparison five out of the six supermarkets had increased the price of at least one of the eight products, with milk rising at three of them and Lidl following the others with a price hike on butter, increasing its 250g block from £1.45 to £1.69.

Asda's cheapest Smart Price butter is currently unavailable as the retailer switches to its new Just Essentials range, meaning the next one available is 30p dearer (Manchester Family / MEN)

In previous weeks we've also seen rises in teabags, coffee and chicken.

This week once again the overall shopping bill has risen at all-but-one supermarket. The only one costing less than last time is Sainsbury's, but it still remains as the most expensive of the lot.

For the first time it's Morrisons that has come out as the cheapest, swiping the crown from Asda which held it for four weeks running.

The main reason is in the price of butter. Asda's Smart Price was the cheapest of the lot at £1.45 for a 250g block.

But with the retailer currently changing its Smart Price range over to its new Just Essentials, it's unavailable - meaning its cheapest is 30p dearer at £1.75.

That, combined with a rise in the price of its chicken and coffee mean it's fallen not only behind Morrisons, but also budget shops Aldi and Lidl too.

Rises at the other stores include milk going up from 95p to 99p at Lidl and Tesco, the latter also increasing the price of coffee, and Aldi putting its chicken breasts up from £1.85 to £1.99.

Morrisons has swiped the cheapest crown for the first time (Manchester Family / MEN)

Despite Morrisons increasing the price of its cheapest white loaf from 36p to 39p, it came out cheapest overall, with a shopping bill of £9.78.

Lidl came in second at £9.82, followed by Aldi at £9.98, Asda at £10.08 (a jump from its previous £9.51), Tesco at £10.21 and Sainsbury's at £10.54.

The only slight difference in sizes among our shopping is the baked beans, which range from 400g in Sainsbury's and 410g in Asda and Morrisons, to the standard 420g in Aldi, Lidl and Tesco - which shows you to keep an eye on the size as well as the price. And where the 300g packs of chicken differ at 330g and 350g, we've worked out the equivalent price for a fairer comparison.
