Supermarket shamed over price hikes now second cheapest behind Lidl - and it's not Aldi

A supermarket that was accused of 'taking the mick' out of shoppers with constant price hikes is now second cheapest behind Lidl.

We've been tracking the cost of the same eight essentials at the six main supermarkets for a year now - and for the majority of that time, it's been Morrisons taking the unfortunate title of 'most expensive'.

Following weeks of continuous price hikes last summer, it was accused of 'laughing at customers', who claimed its prices were rising more than anywhere else.

Even in January the retailer was still charging the most for the shopping basket, which includes a two-pint bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, a pack of chicken breasts, a pack of mince, tea bags, coffee, beans and butter.

But this week that's all changed - with Morrisons taking over from Aldi as the second cheapest supermarket behind Lidl.

While its mince has risen from £2.39 to £2.49, in line with the other supermarkets, the change is largely due to it reducing the cost of its chicken breasts down from £2.59 to £2.25.

Morrisons' 300g pack of chicken breasts is now the cheapest of all the supermarkets (Manchester Family/MEN)

That's now the cheapest you can pick up a 300g pack from any of the stores. The price at Lidl and Aldi is £2.29, Sainsbury's is £2.50, Tesco £2.55 and Asda £3.

The overall bill at Morrisons is now £11.93, just 5p more than Lidl. At Aldi it's £12, followed by Tesco at £12.21, Sainsbury's at £12.31 and Asda at £12.50.

Last week it was Tesco in the bottom slot, but it's managed to climb the chart after Sainsbury's increased the price of its Hubbard's coffee and Asda followed the other supermarkets by hiking its mince to £2.49. Its Just Essentials mince had previously been £2.19.
