Supermarket knocks Morrisons off 'most expensive' spot for first time in six months

A supermarket has swiped the unfortunate title of 'most expensive' from Morrisons for the first time in six months.

The retailer has maintained its position in our weekly price comparison of basic items ever since June, but as we head into the new year that's all changed.

It's now Tesco that is coming out as most expensive, with its £11.50 bill for the eight items, including a two-pint bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, coffee, teabags, butter, beans, chicken breasts and mince.

The change follows a price drop on two of the products at Morrisons, with Savers beans down from 29p to 25p and Savers coffee reduced by 2p a pack.

Little more than four months ago, Tesco was actually cheapest of all six main supermarkets, when its bill came in more than 10% cheaper, at £10.42.

Since then it's been mostly Lidl in the top spot, but more recently Aldi has swiped that cheapest crown, and maintains that position this week, with an £11.11 bill compared with Lidl's £11.23.

Morrisons' price drop comes as the retailer has announced it is cutting 130 prices across 'entry level products' to help customers through the cost of living crisis. This includes ‘Morrisons Savers’ and ‘Morrisons Wonky’ in produce and ‘Morrisons Essentials’ in homeware and health and beauty.

There are some notable savings to be made, including a 1kg pack of rice down from 71p to 48p, pasta sauce down from 57p to 39p and a 3.3kg box of laundry powder down from £3.30 to £2.69.

David Potts, chief executive of Morrisons, said: “Our Savers range offers customers great value on the products they buy every day. We want to do all we can to help when it comes to the cost of grocery shopping and by investing in the range and cutting the prices further, our customers will see a noticeable impact on their budgets at a time when they really need it.”

Earlier this week Tesco announced a new price-lock commitment, freezing the prices of more than 1,000 everyday products until Easter and says that with its Aldi Price Match, Clubcard and Low Everyday Prices initiatives, it has 'significantly increased the number of value lines' it sells.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: “With household budgets under increasing pressure we are absolutely committed to helping our customers, by keeping a laser focus on the cost of the weekly shop.

“So whether it’s price matching Aldi on the basics, locking the price of more than a thousand household staples until Easter 2023, or offering exclusive deals and rewards through thousands of Clubcard Prices – we’re more committed than ever to providing our customers with great value.”
