Supermarket knocks Asda off 'most expensive' spot for first time since January

A supermarket has swiped the unfortunate title of 'most expensive' from Asda for the first time since January.

In our weekly price comparison of grocery essentials, it's now Tesco working out as most expensive for the same eight items, at £12.21.

In fact, Asda is one of only two supermarkets which hasn't risen in price this week, as four of the others have all hiked the cost of a 500g pack of mince, following Morrisons' hike last week.

Three retailers, Aldi, Tesco and Sainsbury's, have increased it by 30p, from £2.19 to £2.49, the latter two no doubt following their Aldi Price Match promises, which don't always work out in the customer's favour.

Despite keeping its mince at £2.19, Asda hasn't improved its position much though, as it's only a penny behind Tesco, with a bill of £12.20.

Sainsbury's and Morrisons are on a par at £12.17, while Aldi is second cheapest at £11.90 and Lidl retains its cheapest position with a bill of £11.58. It too increased the price of its mince, but only by 4p from £2.15 to £2.19.

This is only the second time that Tesco has been the most expensive since we started tracking prices last March. The last time it fared so badly was at the start of January.

Seven months ago, it was actually cheapest of all six main supermarkets, when its bill came in 17% cheaper than it is now, at £10.42.

Since then it's been mostly Lidl in the top spot, with Aldi occasionally swiping the crown.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “With household budgets under increasing pressure we are absolutely committed to helping our customers by keeping a laser focus on the cost of the weekly shop.”
