Supermarket items rising the fastest in price revealed in new research

The price of food in supermarkets has reached an eye watering 13-year high, new research suggests. Families are battling soaring bill rises as the cost of living crisis hits hard.

And one area where people are noticing troubling increases is on their supermarket receipts. Market researcher Kantar has said grocery inflation now stands at 7% in the four weeks to May 15, rising 5.9% from the month previous.

The Mirror reports that products where prices have risen the fastest include dog food, savoury snacks and fresh beef. Meanwhile, the price of spirits had fallen.

There are a number of factors behind the rises, including the increase in energy costs and the war in Ukraine. Kantar said that on the back of this over one fifth of British households now describe themselves as "struggling" to make ends meet.

Of the 22% of shoppers struggling with money, the rising price of groceries was a worry to over nine in 10 people. The latest insight on food costs come as overall UK inflation rose to a 40-year high of 9% last month.

The Bank of England anticipates Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation will climb above 10% later this year. Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Kantar, said: "People are really feeling the squeeze at the supermarket tills and they're having to stretch their budgets further to accommodate rising prices.

"To put the most recent numbers into context, if you were picking up supplies for a family fry-up over the long weekend with toast, eggs, sausages, bacon, and beans it would cost you £6.83 - that's a significant 40p increase on last year."
