Supermarket evacuates as multiple streets closed amid gas leak

A TESCO supermarket has been evacuated, with several streets closed due to a gas leak in Perth and Kinross.

The supermarket and a petrol station had to close after reports of damage to a gas main in Terminus Street, Blairgowrie, at around 2pm on Wednesday.

Customers and employees were evacuated from the premises as a precaution while multiple nearby roads including Gas Brae, Commercial Street and Back Brae were closed.

Police are still instructing people to avoid the area as several roads and the Tesco building remain shut 24 hours later.

Scottish Gas Networks shared a statement online stating specialist engineers are currently carrying out repairs and they are unable to determine when the roads and store will reopen.

The statement read: “Our engineers are on site dealing with third party damage to our gas main in Terminus Street, Blairgowrie.

“To allow specialist repairs to be carried out and to ensure everyone’s safety, Gas Brae, Commercial Street and a section of Back Brae have been closed.

“The nearby Tesco Superstore and petrol station have been evacuated and closed as a precaution for safety reasons.

“At the moment, it’s too early to say when the surrounding roads will re-open.”

Police Scotland also posted a statement online which said: “Due to a gas leak in the Terminus Street area of Blairgowrie a number of roads are closed.

“The incident was reported around 2pm on Wednesday, July 24.

“Some premises have been evacuated as a precaution.

“The public is asked to avoid the area.”
