Supermarket cuts cost of three essentials after weeks of hikes

Morrisons has cut the cost of three essentials. We reported earlier this year how shoppers said that the chain was 'taking the mick' with continuous price hikes.

Despite us sharing the dismay of customers, who had seen the prices shoot up in our weekly comparison of basics like bread and milk, the retailer - who had gone from being the cheapest to the most expensive in a matter of weeks - went on to make further hikes.

But this week there appears to be somewhat of an about-turn - with Morrisons reducing its mince in line with the other supermarkets, making its 500g pack £1.79 instead of £2.39.

It's also reduced the price of its medium white loaf from 89p to 75p and its Savers butter down from £1.95 to £1.89.

While still working out as the most expensive of the supermarkets, above Sainsbury's, Asda, Tesco, Aldi and Lidl, it's a welcome move for shoppers, especially those who have remained loyal to Morrisons throughout.

It means the full basket of basics - made up of an 800g loaf, two pints of milk, 200g of coffee, 160 teabags, a 250g block of butter, a tin of beans, 300g of chicken and 500g of mince - is now £11.50 at Morrisons, 6% cheaper than last week's £12.22.

It's closed the gap with Sainsbury's, where it's £11.12, with Asda only slightly behind at £10.98. Tesco has this week risen to £10.95 after it followed the others with a 10p increase on milk, bringing the price of two pints up to £1.25.

Aldi comes in at £10.81 after a slight increase in the price of bread, up from 36p to 39p, and Lidl remains the cheapest of the lot at £10.37.
