Supermarket Asda set to create 10,000 jobs across 300 new stores

Supermarket chain Asda has announced new plans which would see the creation of 10,000 jobs across the UK. The brand aims to create 300 convenience shops over a four-year period.

The new stores, called Asda Express, would open by 2026 under the plans. The shops would stock a variety of different products including fresh groceries and alcohol as well as Asda's own in-house ranges.

There would be options to purchase hot and cold food including items from business partners such as Leon. The first store was opened in Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands in the last month while a second is set to open today (December 6) in Tottenham Hale in London.

In an unusual move, Uber Eats will be available through some stores as well as a 'to you' parcel collect or return service. The stores would be operated entirely by Asda and separate from the 132 stores that Asda is taking over from the Co-op Group.

Mohsin Issa, Asda’s co-owner, said to the Mirror: "A key part of our growth strategy is to provide customers with more opportunities to shop at Asda closer to where they live or work. With more than three-quarters of the UK population visiting a convenience store in the last 12 months, the potential for growth in this market is significant."

The new shops will be completely separate from the existing Asda on the Move stores which are found at garages across the UK. The Asda on the Move stores are operated by EG Group.
