Superdrug is offering men the chance to check their fertility status for £148. The beauty retailer will allow men to check their sperm's potency with a “male fertility service”.
The test will be similar to those carried out at private clinics, with couriers collecting a sample from the customer's home and taking it to a lab to be analysed. Doctors will provide results assessing the sperm's quantity, quality and motility within 48 hours.
There will be a chance to discuss the results, ask questions and receive advice on any next step to take with Superdrug's medical team. Superdrug says the test will allow men to “more easily access information about their own fertility and take greater control of their reproductive health,” reports the Daily Mail.
The £148 tests are available online but not in store, with lab technicians providing feedback on 22 parameters, reported the MailOnline. Should the results be abnormal, medical professionals will provide advice on ways to improve the chances of conceiving.
According to NHS figures, one in seven couples struggle to conceive – defined as the woman not becoming pregnant after one year of having regular unprotected sex. Dr Babak Ashrafi, one of Superdrug's online doctors, said that while NHS advice is for people to try and conceive for 12 months before approaching their GP, some people would be keen to know about potential issues sooner.
He said: “A year can make a difference to fertility levels so the sooner you know, the sooner you can act. “This is a discrete and convenient service and for people trying to conceive, these test results may help provide answers and signpost them in the right direction.”
