High street retailer Superdrug is set to be the cheapest place to buy a Covid lateral flow test when the UK has to start paying for them.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has signalled the end of all legal Covid restrictions such as self-isolating with the virus.
From April 1, LFTs will no longer be available to people classed as non-vulnerable and most will need to fork out
Since then, Superdrug has announced that it would sell a single lateral flow test for £1.99 and a pack of five for £9.79, the Mirror reports.
Nottinghamshire's biggest company Boots is the only other pharmacy to confirm its prices. A single test there will cost £5.99 and a pack of four costing £17.
In April, the cost of one test will drop to £2.50
The Mirror has approached all other major pharmacies to ask if they would sell lateral flow tests after April 1, and for how much.
Wells Pharmacy said it was still debating, while Lloyds Pharmacy, Rowlands, Tesco Pharmacy and Day Lewis have not commented.
Several European countries have limits on how much a shop can charge for a lateral flow test, but the UK does not.
The Government’s Living with Covid plan sets out the legal obligation to self-isolate following a positive coronavirus test will be axed as of February 24.
The official public health advice will remain that both adults and children testing positive for the virus should stay at home for five days, but this will not be enforced by law.
The Government will also no longer ask vaccinated contacts, and those under 18, to test for seven days, and will remove the legal requirement for contacts who are not vaccinated to self-isolate.
Free universal symptomatic and asymptomatic testing will also end for the general public in England from April 1.
Remaining symptomatic testing will be focused on the most vulnerable, with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) set to determine the details.
Although the plans only apply to England, major developments such as the end to free universal testing are likely to affect the devolved nations.
