The Supercopa de Espana, also known as the Spanish Super Cup, began as a two-team contest in 1982, pitting the La Liga champions against the Copa del Rey victors. Interestingly, until 1995, teams that won both La Liga and Copa del Rey automatically received the Supercopa. Between 1996 and 2019, if a team won both the title and the cup, they had to play the cup runners-up for the Supercopa de Espana. Since 2020, Supecopa has become a bigger spectacle, with four teams — winners and runners-up of La Liga and Copa del Rey — competing for the prize.
On 12th January 2025, Real Madrid and Barcelona will meet at King Abdullah Sports City in Saudi Arabia to compete for the coveted trophy. #10 Real Sociedad: 1 Win
The first winners of the Supercopa de Espana, Real Sociedad clinched the trophy in its inaugural edition in 1982. La Real also competed in the semi-finals in 2021.
Real Sociedad met Spanish champions Real Madrid in the first-ever Supercopa final. They completely dismantled the heavyweights, inflicting a 4-1 defeat upon them, overturning a 1-0 first-leg deficit. Pedro Uralde bagged a brace, Lopez Ufarte found the back of the net, and Jose Antonio Salguero scored an own goal in Madrid’s 4-0 defeat.
#9 Mallorca: 1 Win
Level with Real Sociedad, Mallorca have also won the Supercopa de Espana one time in their history. They have also finished as runners-up once and crashed out of the competition in the semi-finals.
Mallorca, who lost 3-0 to Real Madrid in the Supercopa de Espana semi-finals in 2025, won their first and only Supercopa in 1998. Mallorca beat Barcelona 3-1 on aggregate over two legs, with Dani Garcia (brace) and Jovan Stankovic hitting the back of the Barcelona netting.
#8 Real Zaragoza: 1 Win
Winning one Supercopa de Espana in their history, Real Zaragoza has secured the eighth spot in the rankings. Zaragoza also have two runners-up medals to their name.
Zaragoza secured their first and only Supercopa in August 2004. They beat Valencia 3-2 on aggregate, overturning a 1-0 first-leg deficit. Alvaro Aquino, Luciano Galletti, and Javi Moreno were on the scoresheet for Zaragoza.
#7 Sevilla: 1 Win
The most successful team in UEFA Europa League history, Sevilla have won the Spanish Supercup just once in their history. They have competed in four finals in total, losing three of them.
Sevilla’s sole Supercopa triumph came back in 2007. The Andalusian side claimed a thumping 6-3 victory over European Kings Real Madrid over two legs. Luis Fabiano scored in the first leg to seal a 1-0 victory for Sevilla before Renato Santos’s brace and Frederic Kanoute’s hat-trick sealed a 5-3 (6-3 aggregate) win for Sevilla in the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
#6 Valencia: 1 Wins
Valencia CF are sixth in the rankings, having won the Supercopa de Espana once in six attempts. Ches have lost three finals and crashed out of the semi-finals two times.
Valencia secured their only Supercopa de Espana victory in 1999, beating heavyweights Barcelona 4-3 over two legs. Claudio Javier Lopez scored in the first leg to secure a 1-0 win, while David Albelda, Juan Sanchez, and Francisco Farinos chipped in with one goal each in the 3-3 draw in the second leg.
#5 Atletico Madrid: 2 Wins
Having won Supercopa de Espana two times, Atletico Madrid are the fifth-most successful team in the competition’s history. Los Rojiblancos have featured in the competition a total of nine times. The two-time winners have lost five finals and crashed out of the semi-finals two times.
Atletico Madrid won their first Supercopa in 1985, while their second one came in 2014. They beat local rivals Real Madrid over two legs to win the Supercopa in 2014. Raul Garcia and Mario Mandzukic scored one goal each to propel Los Colchoneros to victory.
#4 Deportivo La Coruna: 3 Wins
Deportivo La Coruna, who are currently toiling in 17th place in the Segunda Division, have three Supercopa de Espana trophies in their cabinet. They have participated in the competition three times, emerging victorious on all occasions.
Deportivo won their first Supercopa in 1995, whereas their last one came long way back in 2002. They beat Valencia 4-0 on aggregate to claim the trophy. Across two legs, Juan Valeron, Victor Sanchez (brace), and Noureddine Naybet scored for Deportivo La Coruna.
#3 Athletic Bilbao: 3 Wins
One of the only three teams that have competed in every iteration of La Liga, Athletic Bilbao have won the Supercopa de Espana three times throughout history. They have also finished as runners-up three times and reached the semi-final one time. Bilbao had an excellent chance to reach the final in 2025, but they failed to overcome Barcelona in the semi-final, falling to a 2-0 defeat.
Athletic Bilbao reached their first Supecopa final in 1983, but Barca came out on top in that encounter. They, however, emerged victorious the next year, claiming their first Supercup. Bilbao’s last triumph in the competition came in 2021 at Barca’s expense. Bilbao claimed a 3-2 win over the Catalans after extra time, with Oscar De Marcos, Asier Villalibre, and Inaki Williams scoring for the Basque outfit.
#2 Real Madrid: 13 Wins
Real Madrid have won the Supercopa de Espana a whopping 13 times, emerging as the second most successful team. Los Blancos have participated in the competition a total of 20 times. They have lost six finals and crashed out of the semis once.
Real Madrid bagged their first Spanish Supercup in 1988, while their last one came last season. They beat arch-rivals Barcelona 4-1 to win the trophy in Saudi Arabia. Hat-trick hero Vinicius Jr. and his compatriot Rodrygo found the back of the net for Madrid whereas Robert Lewandowski scored for Barca.
#1 Barcelona: 14 Wins
With 14 Supercopa de Espana titles to their name, Barcelona are the most successful team in the competition’s history. They have also finished as runners-up 12 times and qualified for the semi-finals on two occasions.
Barcelona won their first Supercopa in 1983, whereas their final one came in 2023. They claimed a 3-1 victory over Real Madrid to claim their 14th Supercopa. Gavi, Lewandowski, and Pedri were on the scoresheet while Karim Benzema scored Madrid’s consolation goal.
