Supercomputer predicts Manchester United's chances of top four finish after Tottenham win

Manchester United defeated Antonio Conte's Tottenham side on Wednesday night in a clash which saw Erik ten Hag's charges close the gap on the current top four. The team won 2-0 thanks to goals from Fred and Bruno Fernandes.

Many fans labelled United's performance at Old Trafford as one of their best since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson. They were completely dominant, registering 28 shots on goal and Tottenham had no reply.

Despite all this however, the super computer over at FiveThirtyEight remains unconvinced of United's top four chances. It is only Ten Hag's first season but given the topsy-turvy nature of the league so far, with Liverpool stalling and Arsenal flying high in first, there is a real chance he can secure a Champions League spot this season.

Their Soccer Power Index (SPI) however, thinks that United will finish sixth behind Tottenham. It currently rates them with a 2% chance of winning the Premier League and a 33% chance of finishing in the Top Four.

Their computers predict that despite Arsenal's good start they will eventually drop off and finish 11 points behind the eventual winners, Manchester City.

FiveThirtyEight's top four is City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. The algorithm seems to think that Jurgen Klopp's side will bounce back from their bad start and comfortably finish third.

Overall it is just a prediction and United should not pay much notice to it. If Ten Hag can secure a result against Chelsea at the weekend, it will much United in a much stronger position in the league and also show that the team are finally starting to gel under the Dutch manager.
