A football supercomputer has predicted that Liverpool will once again miss out on the Premier League title to Manchester City.
The team at FiveThirtyEight have backed the Reds to improve on the slow start that has seen them draw both of their opening games, but Jurgen Klopp’s side will ultimately fall some way short of Pep Guardiola’s relentless City - 11 points short, to be exact.
The prediction model simulates individual games multiple times to work out the probability of each result, combining results throughout the season to predict the final table come May. Liverpool have been given an 18% chance of winning the title this season compared to City’s 58%.

The Reds chances have been deal a significant blow thanks to their slow start, which saw them draw 2-2 at Fulham and then 1-1 at home to Crystal Palace, and an already growing list of injuries including the likes of Thiago, Diogo Jota, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate. Klopp’s side were handed a 30% chance of a second league title in four years before the new season kicked off - those two points almost halving a chance at the title.
Chelsea and Tottenham have been backed to join the two runaway challengers in the Champions League places, while Brighton have been tipped for a remarkable sixth-placed finish - thanks in part to their convincing win at Old Trafford on the opening weekend. Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Southampton have been predicted to go down.
Reds fans will no doubt take some consolation in the computer’s prediction that Manchester United will eclipse last season’s worst finish in Premier League history, with 51 points over the next 10 months leaving them eighth. Liverpool travel to Old Trafford on Monday with both looking for their first win of the season.
