It looks like Super Sonic in Sonic Frontiers will play a more significant role than we first thought.
Sonic Frontiers director Morio Kishimoto told IGN that only Super Sonic will be able to defeat some bosses in the open-world platformer. The golden super hog also boasts a new set of abilities different from regular Sonic, which is in keeping with his appearances in earlier Sonic games – which Sega highlighted in a clip during the 2022 Tokyo Game Show.
The blue blur’s iconic superpowered form first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 way back in 1992 and has shown up in nearly every Sonic game since — even making an appearance in the movie. However, you could only play as Super Sonic in a final battle or after completing secret challenges to unlock him at the end of the game.
Sega making this ultimate form a vital part of clearing open-world challenges is yet another new step forward for the series and seemingly points to some significant changes in its usual structure.
“Up until now, in Sonic games, Super Sonic would only appear against the last boss,” Kishimoto told IGN. “Imagine if the first boss in Sonic Frontiers is as strong as those bosses.”
Sonic can only transform after acquiring seven Chaos Emeralds, items traditionally collected throughout each game. Making them, and Sonic’s ultimate form, available as early as the game’s beginning looks promising for how much freedom in exploration Sega will give players once Sonic Frontiers launches on Nov. 7, 2022.
