One of the most highly-anticipated theme park attractions in years, Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood, will debut in 2023.
It’s been announced that the California site will level up with the new themed land two years after a similar iteration at Universal Studios Japan started welcoming visitors in 2021. It opened to rave reviews.
The area, located in the Lower Lot section of the Los Angeles theme park, will sit alongside attractions other multibillion-dollar IPs such as Jurassic Park/World and Transformers. Nintendo has a market cap of around $60 billion.
The immersive Super Nintendo World was announced in 2016 and broke ground in 2018. It will revolve around the key characters and elements that generations of fans of the Nintendo gaming universe have been in love with for four decades. The Mario Bros. arcade game landed in 1983.
Much like the Japanese version, Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood will “transport theme park guests and Nintendo fans into the world of Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach to become part of their compelling universe.”
While some key details are yet to be made public and construction continues, we do know that it will play host to what is described as a “groundbreaking ride” and “interactive areas” that will appeal to the whole family. The Japanese version of Super Nintendo World features Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge, a ride inspired by the Mario Kart games.
In addition to that, there will be themed dining and stores. Both those concepts are things that Universal Studios Hollywood is already well known for in other areas of the park, such as The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, The Simpsons, and Illumination featuring Despicable Me, and The Secret Life of Pets.
On the subject of shopping, while Super Nintendo World won’t be open until 2023, in the interim, fans will be able to stock up on merchandise at the park’s Feature Presentation retail store on the Upper Lot, which is going to be rethemed in the near future to promote and highlight the incoming attraction.
While some of the specifics are still being kept under wraps, including the exact opening date, bosses at Universal have promised that more details on Super Nintendo World will be announced soon.
