Sunday night’s Super Bowl was watched by millions – and, from Kendrick Lamar’s performance to the Philadelphia Eagles’ very one-sided win, people are still talking about it.
The halftime show also featured the debut of a number of new movie trailers and included action, horror and some family favourites to get cinema-lovers excited.
Here are the films featured:
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
Tom Cruise’s much anticipated last Mission: Impossible film was one featured during the Super Bowl.
Much-loved character Ethan Hunt, played by Cruise, was seen in the trailer performing several death-defying stunts, featuring the tagline: “Everything you were, everything you've done, has come to this.”
It ended with Hunt asking for trust “one last time”. It is expected to be released on May 23.
M3GAN 2.0
Ahead of its summer release (June 27), the comedy-horror sequel M3GAN 2.0 was another teased on Sunday.
The sequel is set two years after the events of the first movie. Gemma has become a successful author and advocates for greater regulation of AI after her famous clashes in the first film with the creepy, viral doll.
But she soon finds out that Megan’s technology has been stolen by a defence contractor, and then needs to upgrade Megan’s AI to fight the rival doll. Utter chaos.
Thunderbolts
Marvel had kept details of their new blockbuster film quite under wraps, but that all changed at the Super Bowl.
We knew the team of the worst villains in the MCU were going to be brought together as a team but their purpose hasn't been revealed until now.
The Super Bowl trailer teased that the misfits are tasked with dealing with a dark new threat, and they're the only ones who can possibly step in to do so.
The film will head to cinemas on May 2.
Lilo & Stitch
Disney’s latest live-action film was also teased.
Hitting cinemas in May, fans of the cute blue nuisance do not have long to wait.
In the live action remake of the hot 2002 film, Maia Kealoha will star as Lilo, the young Hawaiian girl who adopts the crazy blue alien.
Chris Sanders, who voiced Stitch in the original movie, returns to do the same for CGI Stitch on May 23.
F1
Brad Pitt stars as a retired racing pro yanked out of retirement to mentor a younger up-and-comer in this motoring drama.
The teaser showed a montage of Pitt’s character, Sonny Hayes, on the track.
Set for release in the summer, fans have been told “This is just the start”.
How To Train Your Dragon
In another live-action adaptation, this time from Dreamworks, we see the return of Hiccup, a young Viking (Mason Thames) who tames and befriends a dragon.
Gerard Butler reprises his role as Hiccup’s father, Stoick the Vast, having previously voiced the character in the animated versions.
The film is released on June 13.
Jurassic World: Rebirth
The seventh film in the Jurassic Park stories is set five years after the events of Jurassic World: Dominion (2022).
Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey front the human cast, while the new trailer gives a sneak peek against the latest load of dinos to cause carnage.
It debuts on July 2.
Smurfs
Last but certainly not least are our favourite blue mini heroes.
The Smurfs are back – and with a stellar cast. The children’s animation boasts the likes of Rihanna, Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, Dan Levy, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Kurt Russell, and John Goodman.
Coming this July, it will tell the tale of Papa Smurf – played by John Goodman – being taken by evil wizards Razamel and Gargamel.
Smurfette, played by Rihanna, will lead the Smurfs on a mission into the real world to save him.
The film is released on July 18.
