Super Bowl 2023 Gatorade color - and why fans are fuming they missed the shower

Super Bowl fans are fuming after the cameras missed one of the most highly anticipated parts of the day - the Gatorade shower.

The Kansas City Chiefs managed to turn the game around in the final quarter for a thrilling 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and veteran coach Andy Reid somehow managed to orchestrate a route back in front of a nearly 70,000 fans at the State Farm Stadium in Arizona.

As is tradition, the Kansas City Chiefs head coach got a Gatorade bath from his players while they celebrated their win on the field.

Going back to the mid-1980s, the post-game Gatorade shower is one of the most popular moments, with fans betting on which colour the energy drink will be.

Orange was the strong favourite, closely followed by yellow, green and blue, but it was actually an outsider which came through this time round.

The colour of the Gatorade dumped out of a bucket onto Reid's head was in fact purple.

However, fans watching on TV at home were not aware as they claimed the cameras missed the iconic moment.

Furious viewers took to Twitter to express their anger - and try to find out what colour the Gatorade actually was.

"The camera crew deserves to be fired. Millions of people didn’t see what color the Gatorade was," wrote one viewer.

Another added: "FOX REALLY MESSIN AROUND NOT SHOWING THE DAMN GATORADE COLOR"

"GATORADE???? WHERE WAS IT??? WHAT COLOR WAS IT???? I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS," shouted a third.

A fourth tweeted: "The @NFLonFOX not showing the Gatorade color was almost as bad as that holding call by the ref.."

The tradition of pouring Gatorade over the winning coach's head goes back 40 years - but people have only been able to bet on it in the last four.

In one of the very first ceremonial Gatorade pours, New York Giants coach Bill Parcells was covered in orange after besting the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI in California.

Yellow is a popular colour due to its brightness, but there have also been a number of occasions where clear Gatorade is used.

Kansas City head coach Reid got an orange dunking in Florida back in 2020 when the Chiefs won Super Bowl LIV.
