Suns eyeing first winning season ahead of Demons clash

Breakout Gold Coast winger Sam Clohesy insists chalking up the first winning season in the AFL club's history would be "massive" for the Suns.

Gold Coast (10-11) will break their previous best mark for most wins in a single campaign if they can defeat struggling Melbourne at their People First Stadium fortress on Saturday.

Mac Andrew's goal after-the-siren last Saturday to sink Essendon moved the Suns to 10 wins this season - equalling their previous best set in 2014 and 2022.

When taking over as coach ahead of this season, Damien Hardwick believed Gold Coast could play finals for the first time.

That won't happen as they sit 12th with two games remaining, but Clohesy believes there is still plenty to play for.

"It would be massive to the group," Clohesy told AAP about the prospect of recording a winning season.

"We want to really go somewhere, which at the start of the year we wanted to make finals, but if we can't do that this year then a winning season is what we're aiming to do now.

"It's really exciting and I really want to be a part of that."

Clohesy has become a staple of the Suns since debuting during Gather Round, going on to play 18 games after being picked up in the rookie draft.

"It still hasn't really sunk in that I've played as many games as I have and I'm hoping I can take it into next year and become even better," the 21-year-old said.

Days after beating the Bombers and ending their hoodoo on the road, Gold Coast are hoping to take that momentum back home.

The Suns' record at home this season is 9-1, with their only defeat coming against the Brisbane Lions.

However, their form on the road is flipped at 1-9 as Andrew ensured they broke a drought away from home dating back to May 2023.

"Pretty surreal," Clohesy said of beating the Bombers in extraordinary fashion.

"You never really think you're going to be in a game that finishes with a goal after the siren.

"Still floating a little bit, I think the whole team is."
