Alex Neil made three changes to the side that began the weekend win against Cambridge United - one of which was forced upon him by injury. Carl Winchester picked up a groin injury which saw him substituted early in the game on Saturday, and against Rotherham his place was taken by Callum Doyle.
Northern Ireland defender Trai Hume came into the Black Cats' side at the expense of Patrick Roberts, with Hume expected to play at right wingback with Saturday's man of the match Lynden Gooch shifting over to the left to fill the gap left by Roberts. And the third change saw Jay Matete return in central midfield, replacing Elliot Embleton.
With Hume promoted to the starting XI, Arbenit Xhemajli was included amongst the subs. And Alex Pritchard was also on the bench after making his return from a calf injury as a sub against Cambridge.
