Sunderland striker receives outstanding international confirmation after Alex Neil prediction

Ross Stewart has capped off his remarkable football rise as the Sunderland and former Albion Rovers striker is selected for Scotland.

The Stadium of Light striker has netted 22 goals for the League One side this term, his best tally individually.

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke has noticed his form and Stewart will link up with his team ahead of this week's friendly with Poland.

It's the crowning moment for the forward, who was playing junior football at Kilwinning Rangers in 2016 prior to his Albion Rovers move.

He shone in Coatbridge and moved to St Mirren a year later in 2017. He's been with Sunderland since 2021.

Black Cats boss and former Hamilton manager Alex Neil predicted Stewart's maiden call-up after the weekend's 0-0 draw at Lincoln City.

Neil told the Chronicle: “I’m sure Scotland will be keeping tabs on all the Scottish players. I think John Carver (Scotland assistant) was at one of our recent matches.

"I’m sure he was taking a look at Ross and any other players on the day. Steve [Clarke] has a lot to choose from and he will make his best choice.

"Ross has done himself no harm whatsoever this season with the amount of goals he has scored and how well he has played.

“I can foresee, going forward, Ross getting an opportunity but that will be Steve’s decision.”
