Sunderland sent overwhelming Jermain Defoe transfer message as talks continue

Sunderland have been sent an overwhelming Jermain Defoe transfer message by fans.

The Black Cats remain in talks with their former striker over a sensational return to the Stadium of Light after his departure from Rangers earlier this month.

Whilst a deal to sign Defoe would not be restricted by the transfer window shutting due to the fact he is a free agent, there has been enough interest from other clubs that any team looking to sign the former England attacker may have to move quickly.

When asked by ChronicleLive whether they would like to see Sunderland sign Defoe, an overwhelming majority of fans said yes, with 87.7% keen to see him return.

Just 6.3% of fans are against the idea of Defoe returning, whilst another 6% said they are undecided.

Whilst there are fears that Defoe’s arrival could impact Ross Stewart’s fine form this season, most fans believe these are unfounded.

Just 6.8% of supporters feel that signing Defoe could negatively effect 18-goal Stewart, with 88.8% of fans arguing there is nothing to worry about.

A further 4.4% of fans said they were unsure over whether Stewart’s form would be hurt by Defoe’s arrival.

With the newly-managerless Black Cats sat third in the table, two points off the top albeit having played more games than their rivals, fans appear to fancy their chances of going up should Defoe arrive, with 63.5% tipping them for automatic promotion if they sign the 39-year-old.

A further 16.9% of fans believe Defoe’s signing will see Sunderland go up as champions, whilst 18.5% feel his arrival will secure the Black Cats a play-off spot.

Just 1.1% of fans feel Defoe arriving at the Stadium of Light would result in a finish outside the top six.
