Sunderland's game at Reading is on as EFL confirm plans for midweek fixtures

Sunderland's game at Reading on Wednesday night will go ahead after the EFL confirmed plans for their midweek fixture list. All games last weekend were postponed as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

However, with the nation in the middle of a 10-day period of national mourning, it was unclear whether the midweek games would be played. There is a full fixture list of Championship, League One and League One matches on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, with Sunderland due to face Reading at the Madejski Stadium on Wednesday evening.

However, the EFL have now confirmed the games will proceed as planned, with arrangements made for a tribute to her Majesty at all venues.

A statement from the EFL this morning read: "The EFL fixture programme will return as scheduled from Tuesday 13 September, with tributes to be paid to Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II at grounds around the country.

"A minute’s silence will be held before matches, with black armbands to be worn by participants, flags to be flown at half-mast and the National Anthem to be played in stadiums. With a national policing plan now in operation, the League and Clubs will continue to work with forces in respect of any challenges that may emerge regarding policing of specific fixtures.

"Consideration to individual circumstances will be made on a case-by-case basis, in line with standard match Safety Advisory Group (SAG) protocols."

While all sport was cancelled on Friday, cricket and rugby fixtures went ahead across the country last weekend, with moving scenes at the Oval as England and South Africa players took to the field for the third Test match.
