Sunderland's Edouard Michut set to be sidelined until after World Cup break

Sunderland's French midfielder Edouard Michut has joined the group of players ruled out until after the World Cup break, Tony Mowbray has confirmed. On-loan Paris St Germain youngster Michut impressed from the bench in last Saturday's draw at Luton Town, but he was absent from the teamsheet ahead of Sunderland's 2-0 win at Huddersfield Town last night.

The 19-year-old picked up a groin issue at Luton and has had a scan on the injury, and following last night's game Mowbray said that Michut would not be ready until the season resumes at the start of December after the World Cup break - joining the likes of Ross Stewart, Daniel Ballard, and Aji Alese. "I think Michut is going to miss the next two games [against Cardiff City on Saturday, and Birmingham City the following Friday, before the break]," said Mowbray.

"I hope Ross Stewart and Dan Ballard and Aji and probably Michut now will all be ready for the warm-weather training in Dubai through the World Cup break. We're going to go over there and do some training and maybe play a game or two.

"I think that'll be the timescale for him. He's a bit sore, but it's not an injury that will keep him out for too long."

Sunderland have been severely hampered by injuries in the first half of the season, and Mowbray is still easing Ellis Simms back into action after he was sidelined for six weeks with a toe injury. But Simms has made an impact in two outings from the bench already, and that gives an indication that Sunderland will be in a much stronger position as their other injured players return after the break.
