Sunderland's clash with Burton Albion suspended due to medical emergency

A medical emergency in the stands at the Stadium of Light has led to a suspension of play in Sunderland's home encounter with Burton Albion.

Referee Robert Lewis paused proceedings in just the fourth minute of the contest on Tuesday night with a supporter in the West Stand requiring assistance

The players remained on the pitch for almost 10 minutes before being returning to the dressing rooms while treatment was ongoing.

A notice inside the Stadium of Light was shared on the scoreboard, informing fans the 'temporary suspension' came as a result of a medical emergency and that play was expected to restart shortly.

Sunderland also shared an update on social media, posting: "There is a break in play due to a medical emergency in the stand.

"Everyone at #SAFC sends the supporter our very best wishes."

The club has since added: "Fans are advised that play will resume following a ten-minute warm-up.

"We continue to send our best wishes to the supporter involved and thank you all for your cooperation and support."

Play at the Stadium of Light was restarted at 8.45pm following a 52-minute break. The match was goalless at the time of suspension.
