Sunderland's Amad Diallo shortlisted for the Sky Bet Championship Young Player of the Season

Sunderland's Amad Diallo has been for the for the Sky Bet Championship Young Player of the Season award for 2023. The Black Cats forward has become a fan favourite over the course of the season, surpassing any expectations supporters had upon arrival.

The Ivory Coast international, who joined Manchester United for a fee that could rise up to in the region of €40million if certain factors are met, had struggled for game time at Old Trafford and endured a difficult loan spell with Rangers prior to his arrival on Wearside. However, the 20-year-old has flourished under the guidance of Tony Mowbray and has been one of the Championship's standout performers.

Amad has an impressive 11 goals in 35 appearances, whilst also providing three assists for Sunderland this season. Although his long-term future looks to be back in Manchester, the red and white faithful have been impressed by the striker's performances and he's a firm fan favourite.

Amad has been nominated for the award alongside two fellow rising stars in Bristol City’s Alex Scott and Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney. The EFL Awards are set take place on Sunday, April 23, following the Lads' league clash away to West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.

The youngster has also impressed Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag from afar. Speaking back in January about a possible recall from his loan, the Red Devils boss said: "We consider everything, but I have a little bit of reservation about that because I don’t want to stop the process.

"He's made really good progress there so I’m happy with that. When we decide for him to come back, he has to be a player who can compete for the starting line-up or come on for a lot of games and make an impact."
