Sunderland racist smashed up man's BMW after turning up to ex-girlfriend's home and demanding money

A racist turned up to his ex-girlfriend's home and demanded money before smashing up her ex-boyfriend's BMW 3 series.

Dale Liddy turned up to his ex-partner's home on January 31 this year with three of his friends and started banging on her windows and demanding money that he believed he was owed. But when the 29-year-old saw that her ex-boyfriend's BMW was parked outside and saw him inside her home, he began hurling sickening racist abuse before the man's car was smashed up.

Liddy, of Duncan Street, Pallion, Sunderland, appeared at Newcastle's Moot Hall to be sentenced for racially aggravated criminal damage, threats to damage property, and two counts of racially aggravated threatening behaviour.

Neil Pallister, prosecuting, said Liddy and his former partner had been in a relationship for over three years and had a child together, but the relationship ended in June last year. He said: "On January 31 she was at home and a friend of hers had turned up to collect a mattress." The court was told that the man who had turned up was the woman's ex-boyfriend.

Mr Pallister said: "They were in the address at around 6.40pm when she heard banging on her window and saw the defendant outside with another male. He had arrived in a small car with three other males. CCTV showed the defendant and another male going to her window and shouting 'give me my money'."

The court heard that the woman's ex-boyfriend then left the property via a rear door as he "didn't want to aggravate the situation". It was then that Liddy began hurling racist abuse, saying "what's that P*** c*** doing here? It's going to cost his car". After more vile abuse, Liddy then said the man's car was "getting it" and the other men he was with got out of their vehicle armed with a pole and a hammer and began smashing the BMW's windows and damaging the body work. Mr Pallister said around £6,800 worth of damage was caused to the BMW.

Mr Pallister said that the woman then heard Liddy shouting again for money and threatened that her car would be damaged next before the men left the scene. The court heard that the man whose BMW was damaged was left "terrified" by the incident, with the woman saying she is now "scared and worried". The court heard Liddy had six previous convictions for eight offences, but had been out of trouble since 2013 when he was sentenced for being drunk and disorderly.

Vic Laffey, defending, said Liddy was "appalled by his behaviour" and said he was "capable of living a law abiding life". He said after Liddy and his ex split up, there were "unsavoury messages" between the two and he was stopped from seeing his child. Mr Laffey said: "He should have spoken to her but he made a very bad decision to go to her house. Things got progressively worse and it was all caught on CCTV." The court heard that Liddy believed the woman owed him money for the breeding for a dachshund dog.

Judge Mark Giuliani sentenced Liddy to 18 months prison, suspended for two years and ordered him to complete 30 rehabilitation days and a 30 day building better relationships programme. He must also do 200 hours unpaid work and a 10 year restraining order was imposed.
