Sunderland manager sets injury return date for on-loan Manchester United forward Amad

Manchester United forward Amad Diallo will not be fit enough to return for Sunderland during the midweek showdown with Sheffield United on Wednesday night, but the Black Cats are hoping he will feature in their following Championship game with Luton Town on Saturday afternoon.

Amad, 20, was absent as Sunderland returned to winning ways against Norwich City following three straight defeats. However, while that was a blow for the play-off hopefuls and those watching his progress from back at Old Trafford, the Ivorian loanee has laced up his boots in training following a hamstring complaint.

During his pre-match press conference, Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray said: "I haven't seen Amad. He's been with the medical department. He was on the grass yesterday doing a little bit of training with them, but he still had an awareness and a feeling [of the injury]. I've told him to forget about the game. Amad won't be involved, but he will hopefully be ready Saturday."

When initially diagnosing the injury earlier this month, Mowbray added: "He had a scan. There's no injury, there's no tear, there's no damage. The hamstring looks perfect.

"He's never played three successive 90 minutes and he's played 32 of them or something like that. His body is telling him... He's cramping up, his hamstrings are tight, we need to give him a rest, take him off the grass for a few days, let him have a swim, have a massage and a rub down. In a week's time, I think he'll be out there flying again and finish the season strong for us."

Having signed for United from Italian side Atalanta two years ago, Amad spent last season with Rangers and opted to continue his progression in the Championship at Sunderland this campaign. He has played 32 games and registered eight goals and three assists in all competitions.
