Sunderland landmarks lit up in yellow to remember those lost during the coronavirus pandemic

Landmarks across Wearside will be lit yellow on Wednesday night in support of the National Day of Reflection, remembering those who died during the coronavirus pandemic.

National Trust owned Penshaw Monument will be illuminated, as well as the Northern Spire bridge, Hylton Castle, Fulwell Mill, Keel Square, the white lighthouse at Seaburn, High Street West and The Beacon of Light.

The iconic landmarks across Wearside will shine yellow from dusk until dawn.

Wednesday March 23 marks two years since Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered the UK public to stay at home to 'protect the NHS', as the first national lockdown began.

Since March 2020, there has been in excess of 1,075 registered Covid-19 deaths in Sunderland alone.

The National Day of Reflection was first organised last year - in a bid to give the nation an opportunity to remember those who had lost their lives throughout the pandemic. It also gives families and communities affected a chance to grieve and celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed away.

Sunderland Minister held a service or reflection at 1pm, where yellow ribbons were available to tie on the railings outside, and candles were lit to commemorate loved ones who have lost their lives over the past two years.
