Sunderland Lamplight festival cancelled for third year in a row

A music festival in Sunderland city centre has had the plug pulled on it for the third time in three years.

Lamplight Festival was due to land in Mowbray Park from August 5-7. with a star-studded lineup set to grace the stage. Jack Savoretti, the Kaiser Chiefs and Deacon Blue were all set to headline the three-day event, but now organisers have had to pull the plans once more due to 'circumstances beyond their control'.

Announcing the news on their official Facebook page, a spokesperson for Lamplight Festival, wrote: "We appreciate your support in buying tickets for this year's event. But, due to circumstances beyond our control we are unable to deliver a high quality event and have had to make this unfortunate decision to cancel the event in full.

The festival was due to take place in 2020, before the Coronavirus pandemic meant it had to be rebooked for 2021. The next year, the event was postponed once more, due to Government guidance on large scale events.

And a subsequent cancellation on Monday morning made it three cancellations in three years, leading to many followers on social media to voicing their concerns.

Hazel Littlemore, said: "This is 3 times now I’ve bought tickets and it’s been cancelled," while Gordon Nicholson, added: "Why can't they let us know what the circumstances beyond their control is...would make us all possibly feel better about it been cancelled."

Julie Elizabeth commented: "It wasn’t meant to be. Three times now! Not good for Sunderland," with John Ralph, adding: "Ah, that’s a shame, I was just talking about it with a few people yesterday, was really looking forward to it."

Philip Johnston wrote: "Why is it everything I book gets cancelled at last minute? Each time I book a hotel room the event gets cancelled. Just booked the hotel 2 days ago, good job I learnt my lessons and got free cancellation this time."
