Sunderland housing development named after heroic WWII fighter pilot begins to take shape

A housing development in Sunderland which has been named after a heroic WWII fighter pilot is beginning to take shape.

The new housing development in Ryhope, Barton Meadows, comprises of 60 homes being built on land north of Burdon Lane and has recently opened up to the public. Barton Meadows was named after Cyril Barton, a heroic Second World War pilot who died after crash-landing his Halifax bomber in a field in Ryhope following an air raid on Germany in 1944. The pilot steered his stricken plane away from houses and pit-head workings to prevent further casualties and was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery.

The housing project will comprise 54 properties for private sale and six affordable homes for local people through low-cost rent or for sale at a discount to the open market value. Bellway was granted planning permission from Sunderland City Council in February this year and began construction work on the 11.9-acre site in March.

The first selection of homes at Barton Meadows, which included a mix of three and four-bedroom houses in detached and semi-detached styles, were made available to buy off-plan in July.

Hayley Teasdale, Sales Manager for Bellway Durham, said: “There’s been a huge amount of interest in the homes at Barton Meadows since we announced our plans for the site, long before we launched the development on November 26.

“The attractive village location, close proximity to the coast and easy access to Sunderland have all combined to make this a very popular development. There has been particularly strong demand from families, due to the mix of three and four-bedroom properties and the good choice of highly rated schools in the area.

“The launch event was extremely well attended and it was great to welcome visitors to Barton Meadows for the first time. The opening of the sales office means prospective purchasers can now speak face to face with a member of our sales team to find out more about the homes that are available as well as seeing how the site is taking shape. Construction work is progressing well on the first homes at Barton Meadows, including the show-home which is due to open to the public in February next year.”

A selection of three and four-bedroom houses are currently available to reserve at Barton Meadows, with prices starting from £144,896.
