Sunderland goalkeeper Alex Bass set for loan exit as Black Cats now have new transfer priority

Sunderland goalkeeper Alex Bass is set to join League Two side AFC Wimbledon on a season-long loan deal, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

Bass, who started in Saturday's friendly win at Gateshead, had previously been linked with a loan move to League One outfit Leyton Orient but their interest waned after they sealed the signing of Middlesbrough goalkeeper Sol Brynn on a season-long loan deal instead.

He has instead jumped at the chance to join another London outfit after playing second fiddle to Anthony Patterson in the Sunderland goal last season.

The 25-year-old made the move to the Stadium of Light last summer from Portsmouth in the hope of usurping Patterson from the number one spot.

But he made just two appearances for the first team - both in cup competitions - as Patterson impressed between the sticks and earned a call-up to the England under-21 squad.

He did famously score against Newcastle at St James' Park while playing for the Black Cats' under-21 side last season and that is probably what he will be most remembered for during his one season on Wearside.

His expected departure, though, will now mean Sunderland will have to find adequate cover for Patterson in the transfer market, given Tony Mowbray a fresh priority to sort out this summer.

19-year-old goalkeeper Adam Richardson is highly rated at the club, and is under contract until 2026, but Mowbray will be keen to add an experienced pair of hands to challenge both him and Patterson this season.
