Sunderland forward Ross Stewart wins League One PFA Vertu Motors Fans' Player of the Year

Ross Stewart has picked up the award for PFA Vertu Motors Fans’ Player of the Year after a stellar season in a red and white shirt. The Sunderland striker scored 26 times in 49 appearances throughout the campaign, including the second goal in the Black Cats play-off final win over Wycombe Wanderers.

Stewart started every league game of Sunderland's promotion-winning campaign and was rewarded for his fine performances with two call-ups to the Scotland squad. He's yet to make his competitive bow for his country but has a good chance of featuring in their upcoming Nations League fixtures.

The Sunderland striker beat Alfie May, Will Keane, Barry Bannan, Wes Burns and Scott Twine to the award, after a fan vote. There has been plenty of speculation regarding his future on Wearside after the recent campaign.

Reports claim Rangers have joined the race to sign the Scot, but face competition from Middlesbrough, QPR and Sheffield United. Last week, Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman revealed that the club was in talks over extending his deal at the Stadium of Light. Further reports claim the Black Cats are set to make him the highest paid player at the club.
